Some artists start with a plan.
Kate Frost starts with inspiration.
We first discovered Kate’s work at the Hingham Arts Walk, where her layered acrylic pieces immediately stood out. After a conversation—and Ashley adding one of Kate’s originals to her own collection—it became clear that her work belonged in our space. That introduction marked the beginning of what is now part of The Gallery at Noted.
Kate’s abstract acrylic paintings are rich in texture, color, and subtle familiarity. Beneath raised layers and expressive brushwork, hints of geometric shapes and patterns begin to emerge. Each piece reveals itself slowly, inviting you to look closer and discover something new over time.
Her process is deeply personal. Kate describes it as a form of therapy—one that quiets the noise of everyday life and offers a steady, creative outlet through both routine and more difficult moments.
That approach reflects something we value deeply at Noted: the idea of making space for creativity. Not just something reserved for special occasions, but as something we return to regularly—something that grounds us, resets us, and becomes part of how we move through our days.
What We Love About Kate’s Work
There’s a sense of movement and discovery within each piece. Layers build gradually, with different elements emerging and receding depending on how you engage with the work. A familiar shape might sit just beneath the surface, partially obscured by texture or color, only revealing itself after multiple viewings.
It’s a practice of patience—balancing freedom and restraint. The abstract nature of Kate’s work brings a modern, refreshing contrast to more traditional and structured styles, while still feeling approachable. We especially appreciate that Kate signs each piece on the back, allowing it to be displayed in whatever orientation feels right to the collector.
A Front Row Seat to the Process
We recently had the opportunity to watch Kate work in-store, offering a rare, close-up look at her creative process. Starting with a blank canvas, she began layering thoughtfully—spraying, stenciling, and building texture one element at a time.
From nearby, we watched as she paused often—stepping back, considering, then moving to a different area of the canvas. There was no rush, no rigid structure. Just a steady rhythm of creating, observing, and continuing. At times, she carried on easy, thoughtful conversations with passersby, seamlessly blending her process with the energy of the space.
At one point, Ashley asked a simple question:
“Do you have a plan?”
Kate responded, “No, I have inspiration.”
She later shared a binder filled with references she’s collected over time—images, clippings, color swatches—small moments of visual inspiration gathered from everyday life. On her way to the shop that day, she knew she wanted to reflect the feeling of spring, and even in the early stages, that intention began to take shape.
Kate’s work invites you to slow down, look closer, and experience it over time—much like the process used to create it.
Kate Frost’s work will be on display at The Gallery at Noted through April 3, 2026.
